Fight on to contain sharp dangerous farm weed

9:13 am on 9 February 2011

Some farmers and scientists say they are determined to stop a sharp and dangerous tussock-like weed from spreading through Canterbury.

Chilean needle grass has barbed seeds that can pierce animal hides and corkscrew their way into the flesh and bones of animals.

The weed is common in Marlborough and small areas of Hawke's Bay and was found in North Canterbury in 2008.

Canterbury Regional Council says it is working with AgResearch to make sure needle grass is contained in the Spotswood area.

Marlborough District Council says it is waiting to hear whether it can use a new herbicide from Australia to kill the weed.
