Christchurch beaches still polluted after sewage leak

Several popular beaches in Christchurch are still unsafe to swim at after a broken pipe leaked raw sewage into the estuary last week.

The pipe near McCormack's Bay was exposed due to earthquake damage and broke.

The breakage affected the water at Sumner, Scarborough and South Brighton beaches.

Christchurch City Council manager of water and waste Mark Christison says the pipe has been temporarily fixed but the water is not safe yet.

He says a permanent pipe will be installed within the next month or two.
