Ice rink remains a possiblity for Wellington

Wellington City Council is still considering an ice rink for the city, a decade on from when one was first proposed.

Council staff have been in talks with a supplier about the possibility of setting up a temporary rink in the central city.

The council says the main obstacles for building one are the lack of available land and the commercial viability.

It says the only free land is in Johnsonville and notes that ice rinks, which can cost up to $7 million to build, have struggled financially in other parts of the country.

An e-petition published on the council's website at the end of last year received more than 1000 signatures in support of the idea.
