A Wairarapa wildlife reserve has upgraded its kiwi house to allow the public to see rangers working with kiwi chicks and eggs for the first time.
The full development, which cost more than $1.3 million, has been funded mainly by the community.
It will open to the public on Friday.
The young chicks are raised in the house until they reach a certain weight and are released into the 940 hectares of forest.
Pukaha Mt Bruce chair Bob Francis says the new house will help to educate the wider community on the importance of the native bird.
He says development will continue over the next two years to create a world class facility.
