The 2010 All Whites football team capped off a successful year by capturing the supreme Halberg Award at the prestigious sports awards ceremony held in Auckland on Thursday night.

In an impressive hat-trick, the All Whites also picked up sports team of the year and Ricki Herbert was named coach of the year.

It is the first time in the awards' history that football has claimed the overall prize.

To cap the All Whites' winning streak, Winston Reid's last-minute goal against Slovakia at last year's World Cup was named New Zealand's favourite sporting moment.

However, the All Blacks' captain Richie McCaw made it third time lucky edging out the All Whites' Ryan Nelsen for sportsman of the year.

Sportswoman of the year went to shotputter Valerie Adams, for the fifth year in a row.

Swimmer Gareth Kean, 19, who won a backstroke silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, won the emerging talent category.
