Instant fines ahead for illegal camping

3:15 pm on 13 February 2011

Instant fines for illegal camping should be introduced in time for the Rugby World Cup.

Local Government New Zealand says it is working with the Internal Affairs department on regulations to deal with so-called freedom campers who illegally camp and foul reserves and lake and beach fronts.

LGNA president Lawrence Yule says the changes will enable councils to create bylaws to allow for instant fines and the rules should be in place for the Rugby World Cup, which starts in September.

Rental companies expect 12,000 - 13,000 camper vans will be hired by rugby fans.
