A colleague of the late actor Frank Whitten says he was a hugely respected actor with one of the sharpest minds in the business.

Whitten, 68, died on Saturday morning after an illness.

He was most recently known for his portrayal of grandfather Ted West on Outrageous Fortune but was a familiar face on New Zealand and Australian television and movie screens for three decades.

Actress Robyn Malcolm, who starred with Whitten on Outrageous Fortune, told Morning Report he was very interested in portraying dark characters, but had a brilliant sense of humour and was a master of the one-liner.
