Search continues for English tramper near Nelson

Updated at 6:06 pm on 14 February 2011

A large search and rescue operation is continuing near Nelson for a tramper police believe has been missing since Thursday.

Searchers have found notes left by English tourist James Esbester log books at two huts.

Sergeant Mike Fitzsimons says searchers have found signs that Mr Esbester may have climbed to the summit of Mt Luna in the Wangapeka area and then deviated from his planned descent by taking the ridge to Biggs Tops.

Mr Fitzsimons says the weather has been good and a large team of searchers, including dog teams, are looking for the tramper.

An Air Force helicopter will join the search on Monday evening.
