Security at winery concert defended at inquest

8:23 pm on 14 February 2011

An Auckland company that organised a winery concert where a person died has defended security at the event near Napier.

Kenneth Hughes, 47, died in February last year when he fell off a cliff at Sacred Hill Winery into the Tutaekuri River.

Campbell Smith from Civic Events told an inquest in Hastings on Monday the company erected a 1.2-metre-high temporary fence between the concert site and a permanent fence near the cliff.

Sergeant Greg Macklow questioned whether the fencing was sufficient to prevent a concert-goer climbing over it.

Mr Smith said he regarded the cliff as dangerous, but felt the fencing provided mitigated the risk of an accident occurring.

The Coroner adjourned the inquest until late March.
