Tongan wife-killer awaits deportation

6:55 am on 17 February 2011

A Tongan man who beat his wife to death using a cricket bat is being freed from jail and will face immediate deportation.

Tevita Noa was jailed in 2006 for the manslaughter of his wife Thelma Thompson, who had told him she was taking their children and leaving him for another man.

Noa last year failed to stave off deportation.

He will be released from jail next month and deported to Tonga but his parole conditions expire in January 2013.

He will then be able to return to New Zealand and relatives of Thelma Thompson fear a child custody wrangle.

Her brother George Thompson says the couple's two children are still undergoing therapy for their mother's death.

Mr Thompson says Noa wants to claim back the young boy and girl, which is worrying because he still refuses to admit any wrongdoing or show remorse for the killing.

He says Noa should be permanently banned from coming back to New Zealand.
