Water rationing in Tasman district

3:21 pm on 17 February 2011

First stage water rationing will begin in Nelson's Tasman district from Monday as dry weather continues.

A 20% water cut will apply throughout the Waimea Plains, affecting orchardists and farmers.

Tasman District Council spokesperson Dennis Bush-King says a lack of rain since late in January has reduced flows in several rivers.

The critical period for irrigators is only weeks away and at least 50 millimetres of rain is needed to avert further restrictions, he says.
