Waitaki bridges safe to use again

5:39 pm on 17 February 2011

The Waitaki bridges in South Canterbury have been re-opened on Thursday following strength-testing.

The two single-lane bridges had been closed for a week because of flood damage.

The closure meant drivers had to make lengthy detours and access was cut between Hakataramea and Kurow.

Transport Agency area manager Colin Hey says strength-testing and visual inspections of all piers have confirmed that the bridges can safely reopen for use by all vehicles.
