Large response to appeal over Wellington killing

6:51 pm on 18 February 2011

Wellington police say they have had a larger than usual response from the public in relation to a brutal killing in the suburb of Johnsonville, but are still seeking more calls.

They believe Matthew John Hall, 35, was stabbed to death in his bed on Tuesday evening.

The head of the investigation, Senior Sergeant Dave Thornton, says Mr Hall worked for Capital and Coast District Health Board and was the lead singer in a Wellington band.

He says both his professional and personal life are part of the inquiry.

Senior Sergeant Thornton says they have already received a number of calls to the free phone line set up yesterday.

He says they have no idea of a potential motive and have been unable to determine whether Mr Hall knew his attacker.

Police are urging anyone who was in Broderick Road between 12pm on Monday and just after 6pm on Tuesday to call with information, no matter how insignificant.

The number is 0508 BRODERICK.
