Drilling opponents seek support at kapa haka festival

Campaigners against an oil company drilling offshore north of East Cape are trying to drum up support for their campaign at the national kapa haka festival being held in Gisborne.

When the Brazilian energy company Petrobras was awarded exploration rights to the Raukumara basin last year, the Ahika Action Group organised a series of beach protests from Gisborne to East Cape.

Spokesperson Ani Pahuru-Huriwai says campaigners have been at the festival handing out leaflets that explain what Petrobras's plans are.

She says campaigners hope some of those attending the festival will attend a public meeting on Friday night to discuss further protest action.
