The Fire Service in Christchurch says there was a minor explosion in a commercial property in the suburb of Middleton on Friday night.
It says it was alerted to the explosion after the sprinkler was set off late in the evening and the fire was contained by the time it arrived.
No one was involved in the explosion, which is not believed to have been suspicious, and an investigation is under way.
