A senseless waste of young lives is how the police are describing a crash at Foxton Beach, in Manawatu, that claimed two lives.
A Ford Telstar carrying seven people lost control, overturning on the beach, just before 5am on Sunday.
Police say a 14-year-old boy from Shannon was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene.
A 20-year-old woman was found dead in the car.
Three others were seriously hurt and are in the intensive care unit at Wellington Hospital.
Police say they are the 19-year-old male driver and a 23-year-old man, both from Foxton, and a 19-year-old man from Shannon.
The others in the car, a 16-year-old boy from Shannon and a 20-year-old woman from Foxton, were treated for minor injuries at Palmerston North Hospital and discharged.
Police say speed does appear to be a factor in the crash and some of the occupants would not have been wearing seatbelts, but it is too early to say whether alcohol was involved.
