Senior gang members banned from visiting prison

Senior members of the Rebel Motorcyle Club have been banned from visiting the Northland Region Corrections Facility for trying to recruit gang members.

The Rebel MC - Australia's largest outlaw motorcycle gang, with a reported 2000 members - has been linked to methamphetamine distribution, extortion and serious violence.

The Department of Corrections says it has banned three senior members of the gang after prisoner phone monitoring revealed they were intending to recruit new members from the jail population.

It says they target vulnerable individuals who can be convinced that aligning themselves with gangs will make their prison time easier.

The department says it's happy to support police in preventing the gang from getting established in New Zealand.
