Police have been able to piece together some of what happened to a Wellington man before he was killed last week, but need more help.

Matthew Hall, 35, was found stabbed to death in his bed in the suburb of Johnsonville last Tuesday, in what police describe as a ferocious attack.

His funeral is being held in Wellington on Tuesday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Donna Howard says police now know Mr Hall was with musician friends in Wainuiomata for several hours the night before he died.

But she says it is now important to establish his movements on that morning, 14 February.

She is asking people to call with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem.
