Crackdown on paua poaching

4:53 am on 23 February 2011

A blitz on paua poachers on Northland's west coast has netted 27 people and hundreds of undersized paua.

Fisheries officers say the two-day operation focused on Hokianga, and all the offenders were from there or nearby Kaikohe.

Officers have seized a four-wheel-drive, dive gear, and 912 paua.

Fisheries' Northland manager Darren Edwards says the paua fishery is under constant pressure from local people who do not seem to understand the need to keep to limits to sustain it.
