Brown cleared over use of billboard site

The Auditor-General has found nothing untoward in the free use of a billboard site by Len Brown during his successful campaign for the Auckland mayoralty.

The Minister of Local Government called for the inquiry after links were highlighted between Mr Brown's campaign and the Counties Manukau Pacific Trust, which owns the site.

The trust's chief executive, Richard Jeffrey, was on Mr Brown's campaign team, and the trust had business dealings with the Manukau council - which, at the time, Mr Brown led.

The Auditor-General accepted that Mr Jeffrey had removed himself from the decision, that the site had been made available to other politicians in the past, and that Mr Brown declared the value of its use as a donation in his election expenses.
