Southern Ocean search for Norwegian yacht

8:56 pm on 24 February 2011

Two ships and a helicopter are continuing to search McMurdo Sound in Antarctica for a Norwegian yacht and its crew that went missing on Tuesday.

The New Zealand Rescue Co-ordination Centre picked up a distress beacon on Tuesday and Naval vessel The Wellington searched the Ross Sea until bad weather forced it away from the search area on Wednesday morning.

Three people are on board the Berserk and two others from it are on the ice as part of a Norwegian Antarctic expedition about 160km from Scott Base.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society vessel the Steve Irwin joined the search on Thursday and has been using its helicopter to examine the shoreline near the sailboat's last known position.

The vessel Professor Kromov is also helping with the search.
