Police say a helicopter has crashed near Levin, going down near the dunes of Hokio Beach, 10 kilometres north-west of the town.
They say the pilot has been taken to hospital with serious injuries.
The Palmerston North rural area commander, Brett Calkin, says police are appealing for any witnesses to the crash to come forward.
The Civil Aviation Authority says two investigators have been sent to the scene.
