Horse suffers chemical burns in attack

6:30 pm on 7 March 2011

A horse has suffered chemical burns after being attacked at a show-jumping event in Hawera.

Jim Ellis, chief executive of Equestrian Sports New Zealand, says someone apparently squirted a chemical on to the side of the horse's face, narrowly missing its eye.

Mr Ellis says it is the worst attack on a horse he has seen and he understands police are investigating.

He says the horse was able to compete later in the day.
