Financial register for judges considered

A compulsory register of judges' business interests, to avoid potential conflicts of interest, could be added to legislation governing how courts work.

The issue is being explored by the Law Commission as part of its review of the Judicature Act.

The commission has released the first in a series of papers on the review and has called for submissions on whether such a register should be created.

Law Commission president Justice Hammond says he hopes to receive comments on questions such as what must be disclosed.

The register would not tell reveal how much judges are worth, but rather what business interests they have, he says.
