Suspected stabbers got away amid concert crowd

Police say the people suspected of stabbing two men in the carpark of an Auckland polytechnic escaped their pursuers by blending into a concert crowd on the campus.

Two men in their twenties are still in hospital after the attack at the Mt Albert campus on Thursday afternoon.

One of the men was originally listed as being in a critical condition but his injuries are no longer life threatening.

Police have recovered a knife from the site of the attack and seized one of two cars thought to have been involved.

It has been forensically examined.

Detective Senior Sergeant John Sutton says the police are looking for several suspects who fled the scene in a car.

He says they have spoken to about 30 witnesses, including one who gave chase, following the car and blocking it into a carpark.

But the cornered suspects then ran into a large concert crowd where they were able to hide.

Police are appealing for more information.
