'Missing' man remanded again

11:53 am on 14 March 2011

A Wellington man accused of staging his own disappearance has made another brief appearance in the Wellington District Court.

Colin Smithies, 49, is charged with wasting police time.

The alarm was raised and a search was launched in January, after Mr Smithies failed to return home.

His family thought he had been diving in Titahi Bay, but he later handed himself into a police station in Hawkes Bay.

His lawyer told the Court he is still awaiting a psychiatrist's report from Wellington Hospital.

Mr Smithies entered no a plea to the charge and Judge Andrew Becroft remanded him on bail to reappear in court next week.
