Wanganui District Council voted on Monday to start the process of creating a new bylaw to ban gang patches in the city and the rest of the district.
Last year, the Hells Angels motorcycle gang successfully asked the High Court to revoke the bylaw, which forbids anyone showing symbols of membership or support for a gang in public.
The council now says it will ask the Government to help with the legal and financial aspects of a new bylaw.
It also wants the Government to introduce laws banning gang insignia nationwide.
The council says it wants a local ban in place by September.
