Fire damages ship's bridge while loading

Damage to the bridge of a log carrier is being assessed after it caught fire while loading at the port of Gisborne.

An Eastland Port spokesperson says an electrical fault caused the fire on the Lake Arafura at about 7pm on Tuesday.

The Fire Service, which sent two engines, say the crew had extinguished most of the fire before they arrived.

The ship was moved to another dock away from the port's main export berth on Wednesday morning so that the port could continue to operate.

Eastland Port says some of the equipment on the bridge is damaged and it's working with the ship's agents to determine whether the vessel can still operate.
