Homes in Auckland that had to do without electricity for most of Saturday after a seagull struck a power line have had their supply restored.

The seagull, described by lines company Vector as very large, hit the line at Whangaparaoa early on Saturday, and it took about 10 hours to restore power to all the houses cut off.

The incident, on Stanmore Bay Rd, initially cut power to 1045 homes. Most of them were reconnected by the end of the morning but it took till early evening to reconnect about 200 homes.

A local resident says she heard explosions and saw bright blue flashes when the line came down, and smoke from the flashes shot up into the air.
