NZ aid goes towards skifield project in Afghanistan

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade says it's helping to build a ski field in Afghanistan to encourage more tourists to visit the war-torn country.

The project is part of a joint initiative announced in 2008 with the government of the Bamiyan province to support the creation of eco-tourism opportunities.

New Zealand has contributed $100,000 to the project, from about $10 million of development assistance the Government will give to Afghanistan this financial year.

The New Zealand army's Provincial Reconstruction Team is stationed in Bamiyan province, where two of its soldiers have been killed since their deployment in 2003.
