Options for census discussed after quake disruption

The board of Statistics New Zealand was meeting on Monday to discuss the 2011 national census, which the Government cancelled because of the Christchurch earthquake.

Board members will survey the possible options and report back to Statistics Minister Maurice Williamson.

The general manager for the 2011 census, Carol Slappendel, says options include holding it another year, or cancelling it altogether.

She says the board may or may not be able to make a final recommendation as there are still some uncertainties on funding and timelines.

Ms Slappendel says about $42 million has already been spent on the census.
