Axe murderer Ronald Krynen is to be released from prison.
The 34-year-old is serving a life sentence for killing Bernard Dell, 48, and attempting to kill his wife, Denise Dell, in Christchurch in 1995.
Last week Krynen appeared before the Parole Board, which says he poses a low to moderate risk and has emerged as a leader in supervised clean-up work following the Christchurch earthquake on 22 February.
The board says it feels Krynen's tendency to isolate himself and brood is now in check, and opposing submissions from the Dell family have been taken into account.
Retired Detective Inspector Dave Haslett, who headed the investigation, says the randomness of the attack still lingers with him.
He says he sincerely hopes Krynen has reformed himself, and can now achieve something positive.
Krynen will be released in April to an undisclosed residential rehabilitation programme with round-the-clock supervision.
