Rubbish company to pay $92,000 over death

A rubbish collecting company in Auckland has been ordered to pay $92,400 following the death of an employee in March last year.

A rubbish truck owned by Alpha Refuse Collections was reversing from a driveway in Mangere when the man was run over and killed.

William Nicholas was getting a ride to work on one of his company's rubbish trucks and was standing behind it when he was run over.

The Department of Labour says the truck had no reverse warning buzzer or lights, and the lack of these basic safety measures caused Mr Nicholas' death.

Manukau service manager Craig White says Alpha Refuse Collections has been convicted under the Health and Safety Act.

The company was fined $32,4000 and ordered to pay a further $60,000 in reparations.
