Hungarian who killed man with banjo loses appeal

8:26 pm on 24 March 2011

The Court of Appeal has refused to overturn the sentence given to a Hungarian tourist who bludgeoned an elderly man to death.

Ferdinand Ambach used a banjo and dumbell to beat Ronald Brown, 69, over the head, before forcing the broken neck of the banjo into his mouth in December 2007.

Mr Brown later died in hospital.

Ambach was aquitted of murder in 2009 after his lawyers used the defence of provocation, saying Mr Brown had attempted to rape him.

He was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to serve at least eight years of a 12-year jail term.

Ambach has appealed against that sentence, repeating his claim that Mr Brown drugged and sexually assaulted him.

He also said he was not told that he could plead guilty by his lawyer, who was later struck off for serious misconduct.

The Court of Appeal refused to accept those arguments and dismissed the appeal on Thursday.
