A serious crash on State Highway 1 north of Paraparaumu will disrupt traffic in both directions for some time, police say.
The Westpac rescue helicopter has landed on the highway to transport a seriously injured man and woman to Wellington Hospital on Monday afternoon.
The south-bound lane has been closed at Otaihanga Road and officers are directing drivers to another route.
They are turning north-bound traffic back toward Paraparaumu so those drivers can also use a diversion.
