Toyota warns of car shortages

New Zealand's biggest vehicle seller Toyota has warned of stock shortages if its plants in Japan remain closed for much longer.

Several Japanese car-makers have had to shut their factories due to shortages of parts following the 9.0 magnitude which triggered a tsunami on 11 March.

Toyota has had to cancel the production of 145,000 vehicles since the disaster and 16 of its factories still remain closed.

Toyota New Zealand says there may be shortages in this country starting in April if production is halted much longer.

Mazda, Mitsubishi, Honda and Suzuki say they are also experiencing production problems because of a shortage of components.

However they all say they have between one and three months' stock in New Zealand and do not expect vehicle shortages.
