A Wellington taxi driver stabbed on the job has been discharged from hospital.

Shlemon Yako, 60, works for Kiwicabs and was stabbed in the chest and abdomen by a customer, who then fled.

Police say Mr Yako picked up his attacker early on Saturday at the Bay Road taxi stand in Kilbirnie and drove him across town to Wilton where he was stabbed.

Kiwicabs general manager Ninos Zaya says drivers are wary about picking up customers in Kilbirnie due to a number of rough bars.

Mr Zaya says the company does not have security cameras in their cars, but thinks they should be set up at some taxi stands.
