A post-mortem has been completed on the man fatally shot by police in Hawke's Bay.
Lachan Kelly-Tumarae, 19, died early on Monday after being shot by police near Fernhill, west of Hastings.
Police say a night shift patrol was working in Wordsworth Crescent in the Napier suburb of Maraenui just after 1.30am when it noticed a man acting suspiciously near a parked vehicle.
They say the officers approached the man - subsequently identified as Mr Kelly-Tumarae - but retreated when he pointed a gun at them.
Several police cars then followed his station-wagon to Fernhill, where, according to police, he stopped suddenly, got out of the vehicle and again pointed the gun at officers.
A forensic examination of the scene is continuing, and police say they are speaking to staff, family members and possible witnesses to get a precise picture of the events leading up to the shooting.
Detective Superintendent Andy Lovelock says the investigation is still ongoing and at this stage police cannot confirm the number of shots fired by the police at the scene.
He says they will be in a much clearer position to confirm details as they get to the end of the week.
The shooting is the subject of a police homicide inquiry, a coroner's inquiry and an inquiry by the Independent Police Conduct Authority.
Investigators from the authority met with police on Tuesday and have visited the scene of the shooting.
