Fletcher Construction has won the contract to build another section of the Waikato Expressway between Hamilton and Auckland.

The Government announced on Tuesday that the company will design and build the 12-kilometre Ngaruawahia bypass for $150 million.

It's expected that up to 300 new jobs will be created for the three-year project, work on which is due to start in September.

Transport Minister Steven Joyce says that despite the financial demands of the Christchurch earthquake on 22 February, the expressway remains a priority because of the economic and safety benefits it will bring.

The Government hopes to have the 102km road ready by 2019 at a total cost of about $2.4 billion. The bypass is one of seven sections still to be completed.
