Bailey Junior Kurariki, who gained notoriety for being convicted of manslaughter when he was 12, has pleaded guilty to charges of assault and resisting police.
When the 21-year-old appeared in the Manukau District Court on Wednesday, a lawyer asked to represent him said he had been told by Kurariki that he did not want a lawyer and wanted to appear for himself.
Kurariki described himself as an innocent young black person who had lost his father but also told the court he wanted to plead guilty to speed the process up.
His mother, who was in the front row of the public gallery, stood and told the judge that the accusations against her son were untrue and that she was laying assault charges against the police.
Kurariki was also facing a charge of theft of a bicycle but the judge had that dropped.
Earlier, Kurariki had been stood down for arguing and speaking over the judge and was stood down.
He was remanded in custody till 2 May.
Kurariki was involved in the killing of pizza deliverer Michael Choy in 2001. Convicted of manslaughter he served his sentence and was released in 2008.
