9:31 pm on 31 March 2011

A military helicopter landed safely at Paraparaumu airport on Thursday after reporting smoke in the cockpit.

The incident sparked a full emergency at the airport north of Wellington at about midday.

The Defence Force says an Iroquois helicopter was transporting an engine from Ohakea airbase near Palmerston North when fumes were seen coming from it.

The three people on board were directed to make a precautionary landing at Paraparaumu.

The Fire Service says it sent four fire trucks but the helicopter landed safely and no one was injured. It says there was no fire on board.
