Pledge to put more senior officers on front line

4:30 pm on 31 March 2011

The new Deputy Police Commissioner says he wants senior officers to spend time working on the front line.

Superintendent Mike Bush, currently Counties-Manukau district commander, will take over the position of Deputy Police Commissioner - Operations from veteran detective Rob Pope.

Mr Bush says he has already been working with new officers in South Auckland to try to instil a police culture that puts victims and crime prevention first.

He says he agrees with a PricewaterhouseCoopers report that says managers need to be better in touch with staff on the ground.

Mr Bush says it is important every senior officer, including the commissioner, spend time on the front line so they can understand the work that officers do every day.
