Dampener predicted over settlement celebrations

6:15 pm on 1 April 2011

One of the negotiators of the Ngati Makino settlement says the passing of the Marine and Coastal Area - Takutai Moana Act will put a damper on any celebrations of the Bay of Plenty iwi's $11.9 million settlement.

Treaty Negotiations Minister Chris Finlayson will sign the settlement deed at Otamarakau Marae near Maketu on Saturday.

Annette Sykes says it's likely to be overshadowed by new grievances created by the new act.

Waatea News reports Ngati Makino stretches from Maketu to Matata and inland to lakes Rotoma and Rotoiti.
