Last-minute pleas fail to stop deportation

A Thai national who has been living illegally in New Zealand was deported on Friday afternoon after a High Court hearing in Auckland.

Chayasazh Oajwajee has lived in New Zealand for nearly 15 years, during which time he fathered a child who is a New Zealand national.

But he has not had a visa since 2001, and after interviewing him in early March Immigration New Zealand issued a deportation order.

Oajwajee's lawyer, Frank Deliu, said during Friday's hearing that his client's partner had approached a lawyer and told them she had tried to commit suicide. An ambulance was called and she was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

Mr Deliu also said his client would no longer be able to see his nine-year-old daughter, who lives in Christchurch with her mother, for many years.

Oajwajee was made to leave the country on a Friday afternoon flight after a judge declined his request to have the deportation order stopped.
