Motorists in Auckland are being reminded to check for bikes before opening car doors, after a cyclist was seriously injured.

Musician Don McGlashan, broke his collarbone and a number of ribs after being thrown from his bike in the suburb of Mount Eden on Monday, when a car door was opened in front of him.

Last November, cyclist Jane Bishop died when she fell beneath an on-coming truck after trying to avoid a car door on Tamaki Drive in Auckland.

Auckland Transport says the increasing popularity of bike riding means all road users must share road space responsibly.

With the onset of winter, community manager Matthew Rednall says riders are encouraged to wear bright reflective clothing and turn on their bike lights.
