A Hamilton GP has been found guilty of professional misconduct after allowing his unqualified wife to perform medical procedures and for transferring patients to his clinic without their permission.
The Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal issued its decision on Monday following a hearing in February this year.
Suresh Vatsyayann allowed his wife who is not a trained or registered nurse to carry out cervical smears, give vaccinations and remove intra-uterine devices.
It found that he had then signed off medical records indicating that he performed the procedures.
The Tribunal says the multiple breaches can only be described as grave and negligent.
Dr Vatsyayann was also found guilty of enrolling patients at his clinic without their consent.
In 2009, the GP was found guilty of professional misconduct for falsifying notes of two patients.
The tribunal is calling for submissions on what penalty to impose on him for the latest case.
