Fatal helicopter crash in Canterbury

2:07 pm on 7 April 2011

One person is dead and another seriously injured after a helicopter crash near Lake Coleridge in Canterbury.

Police say the helicopter crashed in the Mathias River Valley, west of Lake Coleridge on Wednesday.

The pilot, Adrian Mayberry, 59, died at the scene and a passenger was in a stable but serious condition in Christchurch hospital.

The privately-owned helicopter dropped a group of hunters in the area on Wednesday morning and authorities were alerted when it failed to return for the group in the afternoon.

Rescue Coordination Centre spokesperson Ross Henderson says two helicopters were sent to look for the missing Robinson R22. The wreckage was found about an hour later.

Police and the Civil Aviation Authority are investigating.
