Police in Lower Hutt are looking for a man who is believed to have shot another man in the leg with an air rifle in the suburb of Naenae.
The Armed Offenders Squad cordoned off an area around Waddington Avenue and Seddon Street at about 6pm on Friday, but the offender was no longer in the area.
The wounded man was taken to Hutt Hospital and police are talking to him there.
Senior Sergeant Pat Thomas says the men know each other and the incident arose from a neighbourhood dispute. They do not believe the offender poses a threat to the public.
