The Lottery Grants Board is to receive $6.8 million from Saturday night's record $35 million Lotto Powerball jackpot.
About 2.5 million tickets were sold, earning $34 million - the highest taking ever for a single week.
Some 20% of all Lotto ticket sales go to the Lottery Grants Board, which distributes the money to charities. $165 million was paid to the board in 2009/10.
Some 56% of Lotto earnings are paid in prizes, another 10% covers tax, 7% goes to the retailers and 7% pays for Lotto's operating costs.
Dannevirke and Hamilton winners
One of the winners of Saturday night's first division has claimed their $17.5 million prize, from a ticket bought in Dannevirke.
Tararua District mayor Roly Ellis says the win will do a lot for Dannevirke's psyche.
He says the southern Hawke's Bay town of about 6000 people has been through some tough times with three serious droughts in recent years, and he hopes the winner is a local.
Mr Ellis says there are projects in every town that need doing, such as expanding the Dannevirke domain, but ultimately it is up to the winner to decide what they want to do with the money.
The holder of the other winning ticket, sold in Hamilton, has not yet
come forward.
