Inquiry wanted into Governor-General's costs

The Republican Movement is calling for an inquiry into the cost of keeping the Governor-General in office.

In the past financial year, the Governor-General cost $3.2 million.

This amount included the Governor-General's salary, the cost of running two residences, 30 employees, advice and communications costs and performing official duties.

However that's only 5% higher than a decade ago, despite an equivalent rise in inflation of about 30%.

The Republican Movement says there should an inquiry into what expenditure goes into the office.

But Wigram MP Jim Anderton says that when compared to the cost of holding elections for a president, the current cost of having a head of state represents value for money.
